Generation calculator FAQ

What are the generations and their years?

Using Pew Research Center ranges: Silent Generation 1928 to 1945, Baby Boomers 1946 to 1964, Generation X 1965 to 1980, Millennials 1981 to 1996 and Generation Z 1997 to 2012. Common extensions add the Greatest Generation (1901 to 1927), Generation Alpha (2013 to 2024) and Generation Beta (2025 to 2039).

Am I Gen Z or a Millennial?

By Pew's definition you are a Millennial if you were born from 1981 to 1996 and Gen Z if you were born from 1997 to 2012. People born around 1993 to 1998 are often called Zillennials because they share traits of both.

Why do different sources give different years?

Generations are not official categories. Researchers pick boundaries based on shared historical events and technology, so ranges vary by a few years. Pew Research Center ends Millennials in 1996, while McCrindle Research uses 15-year bands and ends Gen Y in 1994. The calculator lets you switch between both.

What is a cusper or micro-generation?

A cusper is someone born within a couple of years of a generation boundary. Popular micro-generations name some cusp groups: Generation Jones (1954 to 1965), Xennials (1977 to 1983) and Zillennials (1993 to 1998).

What generation comes after Gen Alpha?

Generation Beta, starting with babies born in 2025. The name and the 2025 to 2039 range come from McCrindle Research, which also named Generation Alpha.
